Diversity and Integration: the Role of Social Work with Migrants

Portuguese society is increasingly plural, reflected, among other aspects, in the significant presence of migrants from different cultural, ethnic and social backgrounds. This diversity manifests itself in multiple dimensions: cultural and bio-social, and poses new challenges to social intervention. In the field of Social Work, working with migrants requires specific technical and relational skills, as well as an in-depth understanding of the social, economic and cultural dynamics that shape migratory processes. This qualitative and exploratory study used semi-structured interviews with 14 social workers who work in social institutions in the district of Lisbon. The analysis of the data shows that diversity is a central element in working with migrants, while presenting challenges and opportunities for the promotion of human rights and full integration. It is concluded that the professional experience of social workers reflects the complexity inherent to integration processes, but also the transformative potential of Social Work in the promotion of social justice, human dignity and community cohesion.
