Summary: Several studies have shown a theoretical relationship between pro-atherogenic lipid profile and subclinical hypothyroidism,
which could rise if the latter could condition increased cardiovascular risk.
Objective: To establish the association between subclinical hypothyroidism and parameters that can determine an increased
cardiovascular risk or an unfavorable lipid profile.
Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted in the province of Albacete in January 2012 in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism.
Laboratory parameters, physical examination and medical history were collected. Subsequently, cardiovascular risk was estimated by
Framingham.
Results: No increase in cardiovascular risk factors was found. The value of TSH in patients with pathological LDL-cholesterol was
increased disease without statistical significance (p = 0.412, 95% CI [-0.45, - 0.179]). No relationship between TSH and total
cholesterol (p = 0.641), HDL (p = 0.931) or LDL (p = 0.747) was found. Only, association with a pathological level of triglycerides (p =
0.0004) was detected.
Conclusions: There is no relationship between subclinical hypothyroidism and increased cardiovascular risk, increased cardiovascular
risk factors or unfavorable lipid profile except for pathological levels of triglycerides.
