Abstract

Introduction. The objective of this study was to determine the level of self-esteem, impulsivity,  presence of fear of maturity and feeling of guilt, and the association of these variables with the concern  over body shape in patients diagnosed with Eating Disorder (ED).

Method. The clinical sample is based on 30 women diagnosed with Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa,  from 14 to 24 years old (M= 19,1 SD=0,54) and Spanish nationality. For the evaluation of the study  variables it used the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), the  Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), the Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL) -90-R) and the Eating  Disorders Inventory-2 (EDI-2).

Results. The group diagnosed with BN obtained an average puntuation more raised in the variable concern for body shape than the AN group. The self- esteem presented a negative statistically  significant relationship with concern over body shape in the total of the sample. There is a positive  statistically significant relationship between the concern over body shape and impulsivity, guilt and fear of maturity in the total sample. In addition, these variables explained 77% of the variance in the  concern over body shape.

Conclusion. The findings of this investigation highlight the importance of self-esteem, impulsivity, guilt  and fear of maturity in the presence of concern over body shape in women diagnosed with AN  and BN, so it is necessary to emphasize their detection for its subsequent approach in intervention  programs.
