Abstract

Aims: To study if availability, in a hospital pharmacy, of different sizes of bottles of high consumption and low cost drugs (ibuprofen syrup, 30 and 90 milliliters) affects, quantitatively, its dispensing.

Methods and Material: Observational and retrospective study based on data recorded by the pharmacy of Garrahan Pediatric Hospital (Buenos Aires, Argentina) January/2011 to October/2014. Main unit analysis: quantity of bottles of ibuprofen syrup (30 to 90 mL) dispensed.

Results: In October, 2014 only bottles of 30 mL were dispensed (4113 units), equivalent to 123390 mL of ibuprofen syrup. The months of October 2011, 2012 and 2013, were dispensed 138330, 131220 and 98010 respectively mL (bottles x 90 mL).

Conclusions: To have available syrup bottles of different sizes would not be related to changes in the dispensed total amount of a high consumption and low cost drugs (ibuprofen) by the pharmacy of a tertiary referral pediatric hospital.
