Exploring suicidal ideation in adolescents and young adults: eating disorders (ED), psychological distress, self-esteem and family satisfaction.

This investigation analyses the effect of several psychological factors, such as eating disorders (EDs), psychological distress (anxiety and depression), self-esteem and family satisfaction, on suicidal ideation in adolescents and young adults. The study was carried out in the provinces of Cádiz and Málaga (Spain), using quantitative and cross-sectional methods. The sample included 494 participants, primarily Spaniards, aged 16 to 29. A unified questionnaire was used, which included several standardized scales to measure suicidal ideation, eating disorders (EDs), psychological distress, self-esteem and family satisfaction. Results revealed a significant relation between eating disorders, psychological distress, and suicidal ideation, while low self-esteem and family satisfaction were negatively associated with suicidal ideation. The regression analysis indicated that these factors explained 32.1% of the variability in suicidal ideation. Moderation analyses showed that age, but not sex, impacted the relation between eating disorders, self-esteem, and suicidal ideation, with stronger effects observed among younger participants. These findings underscore the importance of addressing eating disorders, psychological distress, self-esteem, and family satisfaction through both educational interventions and ongoing research, as they are crucial factors in preventing suicidal ideation among adolescents and young adults.
