The Alvarez cardiac prosthesis

A prosthetic disc valve for the mitral position was designed by the Spanish cardiovascular surgeon Francisco Alvarez in 1964. The valve was inserted in Spain and in the United Kingdom until 1967. Multiple thromboembolic complications stopped its application.
