Quality of Employment in Peru: A Correlational Analysis Between Health Insurance Affiliation and Salary Income

Introduction: Peru faces high labor informality (70.7%), raising questions about its impact on quality of life. This study analyzes the relationship between employment conditions—specifically social protection measured through health insurance affiliation—and the economic well-being of workers. Methodology: A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the National Household Survey 2024 (n = 183,687). A simple linear regression model was employed, using the logarithmically transformed monthly income as the dependent variable and the health insurance system (scale 1-6) as the independent variable. Resulted: Results revealed a statistically significant negative relationship between both variables (? = -0.078; p < .001; R² = 0.115). Contrary to the hypothesis, greater formalization in insurance affiliation was associated with lower reported income, explaining 11.5% of its variability. Conclusion: The findings reveal a complex and inverse relationship between labor formality and economic income in Peru, suggesting that social protection does not directly translate into higher wages. This helps explain inconsistencies in the literature regarding the immediate economic benefits of formalization in contexts of high structural informality.
